PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility for ARC,
LHARC, PAK, and PKZIP archivers. THE BRIDGE features easy
flat archive menu driven compression and extraction routines.
It's ideal for the everyday user who is interested in 'getting
the job done' . It is not necessary to have ALL of the archiver
programs that are suppported by the BRIDGE. Users may select
the archiver of their choice and all BRIDGE operations, i.e.
extract, compress, SFX creation, filtered directory displays,
etc. will then be directed to the selected type. TERMINUS
accepts custom parameters and allows for user tailoring of most
operations. Hands-free toggled virus detection is provided for
both compress and extraction operations. McAfee's VIRUSCAN
program is called up to scan all files extracted and those files
which have been tagged for compression. THE BRIDGE uses an easy
system of flexible defaults which are auto-configured when
the program is first run to help speed up program installation.
A path pick list is used to store frequently selected paths and
provide the user with quick selection of source and target
directories.
THE BRIDGE was designed to run from a hard disk but will
work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy. It
caters to the low-end of the video standard spectrum by
offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color
and those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ
a money saving green, amber or white monochrome display device.
TERMINUS may be worked from the keyboard or by a Microsoft
compatibile mouse.
This program does not attempt to incorporate every possible
archive option offered by PKZIP, PAK, LHARC, or ARC. Instead,
it offers a modest selection of menu powered options that can be used
with ease in today's computer and telecommunication environments which
demand user competence in the areas of file compression, extraction
and computer virus infection prevention.
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS(c) is simple, easy to use, it gets the job done!
- PAGE 4 -
***** INSTALL THE BRIDGE TERMINUS(c):
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS(c) operates most efficiently when used in
conjunction with a hard drive. You may also use this program with
2 high capacity floppy drives(720K, 1.4MEG, 1.2MEG) or any
combination of hard and floppy drives. The minimum for operation is
ONE HIGH CAPACITY FLOPPY BOOT DRIVE and/or ONE HARD DRIVE.
PKZIP(tm) files needed are : PKZIP.EXE; UNZIP.EXE;
ZIP2EXE.EXE
McAfee VIRUSCAN files needed: SCAN.EXE
BRIDGE TERMINUS files needed: BRT21A.EXE; BRTHELP.EXE;
BRTDPF.EXE;
MS/PC DOS files required : COMMAND.COM
PAK Compression Utility : PAK.EXE v2.51 or higher
(command line verison)
Yoshizaki LHA212 : LHA.EXE v2.12 or higher
ARC602 : ARC.EXE, MKSARC.EXE
HARD DRIVE: 1. Create one subdirectory for BRIDGE TERMINUS
files, all others may be logically grouped
into their own separate directories, i.e.
all ZIP together, all ARC together, etc.
The default table allows for separate dirs
for each group. Also, it is not necessary
to have every archiver listed(*see note*)
2. Copy all needed files to their respective
subdirectories.
3. Run BRT21A.EXE either directly or from
your shell, then press F5 to configure.
------------------------------------------------------------
2 FLOPPYS : 1. Format a blank high capacity disk(*see note*)
2. Copy ALL needed files to this disk. Note that
it is not necessary to have every archiver
listed on this disk, just the one you wish to
use. Having more than one allows you to switch
between types while the program is running.
3. You MUST copy COMMAND.COM to the disk.
4. Run BRT21A.exe, then press F5 to configure.
- PAGE 5 -
NOTE: TERMINUS will not run satisfactorily in a system that uses only
360K disk drives and no hard drive, or uses a 360K boot drive
with a high capacity second drive BUT NO hard disk.(disk space!)
NOTE: The BRIDGE is a SHELL Menu Driver for the listed archive types.
If you wish to switch between types while running the program
you MUST have the archiver you wish to switch to clearly
declared in the DEFAULT TABLE and all required files must be
present at the specified location.
NOTE: It is not necessary to have ALL archiver programs supported by
the BRIDGE. The minimum requirement is ONE archiver.
***** CONFIGURE THE BRIDGE TERMINUS:
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS(c) may be configured from the main
program menu or any sub-menu while the program is running. It
is highly recommended that you configure your paths and
parameters when running the program for the first time. You
may use separate directories for the compress or extraction
process. Designate different target directories if so desired.
Take your time and plan where you want the file action to occur
for each of the functions. Make sure that you save the default
parameters when you are done. Here is an explanation of the
program parameters:
BRIDGE TERMINUS PRGMS : Drive and directory where
BRIDGE TERMINUS(c) files are located.
COMPRESS - SOURCE PATH: The directory path that will
hold all files that will be
compressed.
COMPRESS - TARGET PATH: Directory path where the compressed
file will be created. This can
be the same as the source path.
EXTRACT - SOURCE PATH: This directory will contain the
compressed file(s) that get extracted.
EXTRACT - TARGET PATH: Directory where all the files
that are extracted from the compressed
file will end up. This can be
the same as the EXTRACT FILE
SOURCE path.
McAFEE SCAN PRGM PATH: Location of SCAN.EXE
SCAN.EXE - PARAMETERS: /A /NLZ /NOMEM (no modifications)
SEA ARC PROGRAMS PATH: ARC.EXE and MKSARC.EXE location.
YOSHI LHARC PRGMS PATH: Put LHA.EXE version 2.12 here.
NOGATE PAK PRGMS PATH: PAK.EXE should be placed here.
PKWARE ZIP PRGMS PATH: PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, ZIP2EXE.EXE
- PAGE 6 -
DOS SHELL PATH & FILE: Location and name of your DOS shell
program i.e. D:\utility\command.com
c:\tools\pctools.exe
STARTUP ARCHIVE TYPE: Choose from the five types supported
by the BRIDGE. This will be the type
that TERMINUS will start with each
time the program is run.
COMPRESS/EXTRACT PWORD: Password for garble protection of
archived files.
CUSTOM COMPRESS PARAMS: Enter your custom parameters which
will replace TERMINUS params when
you press F4 while in the COMPRESS
or EXTRACT submenu.
CUSTOM EXTRACT PARAMS: Parameters for custom EXTRACT
***** FILE MANAGEMENT
You may jump in and out of THE BRIDGE TERMINUS, each
time copying, moving, deleting, etc. the files you choose.
Just press F3 at any menu. THE BRIDGE TERMINUS will suspend
operation while you are in your shell/utility. You can get
back to THE BRIDGE TERMINUS by using the EXIT/QUIT function
of your utility or by typing 'EXIT' at the DOS command prompt.
DO NOT attempt to go back to THE BRIDGE TERMINUS by re-launching
BRT21A.EXE instead of using your SHELL's 'EXIT' function.
PCTOOLS V5.5 & V6.0, XTREE PRO and the NORTON COMMANDER
were tested successfully with the 640K memory model*. You may
even specify COMMAND.COM so that you have direct access to DOS.
The BRIDGE TERMINUS program is very small and does not reserve
much memory for code and data(145K).
* It is reccomended that your system have 640K memory.
You will need this much memory if you plan to run PCTOOLS v6.0
N.R. full blown shell from THE BRIDGE TERMINUS. Other shells
need less RAM and will reduce the required memory reserve. See
page #11 on how to determine available RAM.
- PAGE 7 -
SPECIAL NOTE TO USERS OF PCTOOLS(tm) PCSHELL:
IF you add an entry to your application menu and run THE
BRIDGE TERMINUS from there, you should not experience any
problems. If you run BRT21A.EXE from the directory on your
hard disk directly by pressing return or clicking when the file
is highlighted and you have QUICK RUN 'ON' in your option menu,
you will have much less memory to work with.(about 200K less)
Turn QUICK RUN 'OFF' or add an entry to your applications menu
and run it from there. Also, it is not advised to run PCTOOLS(tm)
RESIDENT since this will eat up more memory needed for THE BRIDGE
TERMINUS and the satellite programs.
***** MOUSE OPERATION:
The two button Microsoft Mouse hardware specifications
are supported by this program when used in conjunction with a
color display/card that supports the IBM CGA C80 standard.
The program's video mode auto-detect logic disables mouse
operation if a Monochrome Display Adapter is detected. Only
keyboard entry is functional in MONOCHROME video mode(IBM MDA
standard). Logitech and all other Microsoft Mouse compatible
mice should function properly. The program logic checks for
a 'connected' mouse. You should not experience any trouble
if your mouse is truly M.S. compatible, connected to the
serial port or buss card, and the mouse driver software was
installed prior to running this program.
***** DIRECTORY VIEWS:
You may view the contents of the COMPRESS SOURCE, COMPRESS
TARGET, EXTRACT SOURCE and the EXTRACT TARGET directories by
clicking the mouse button when the cursor is over the letters
A, B, C, D on the top function bar in the right hand corner.
You may also press the CTRL key followed by the letter of your
choice.
***** COMPRESS OPERATIONS:
This version doesn't default the file list for COMPRESS
operations as '*.*'. You MUST select a single file or a
group of files for an archive operation. The directory for
COMPRESS SOURCE files is the directory displayed when you are
selecting a file group. If you don't tag any files or forget
to specify an archive target file name, a message will be issued.
SHORTCUT: If you wish ALL files in the SOURCE directory to be
compressed - press <SHIFT> #8 and '*.*' will appear in the
source file(s) window.
- PAGE 8 -
Lists of files can be archived in the following manner.
Click or press enter when the file(s) you desire to add to
the archive file are highlighted. Press <ESC> when you are
through. Press #2 and enter a name for the archive target you
are about to create. Select #3 and the list of files will be
archived. If you have already made an ASCII text file
list(see individual archiver docs for further information) just
click or press enter on that file when it is highlighted in the
COMPRESS SOURCE directory display(press #1). The first character
of the archive list filename MUST be '@'. Select only one list at
a time.
Menu option #4 allows you to delete any file within an archive
file. You may choose any archive from the source or target dirs.
The files within the archive are then displayed. Choose one or
several files to delete and then proceed.
***** EXTRACT OPERATIONS:
One thing to remember here is that only the EXTRACT
SOURCE directory is displayed for extract file selection. The
directory display is filtered for the type of archive chosen.
SHORTCUT: If you want ALL files extracted you don't need to
tag files within. Press <SHIFT> #8 and '*.*' will appear in
the extract file list window.
***** SDN FILE EXTRACTIONS:
ARCHIVE files with the SDN extension are created and then
distributed by the SDNet/Works! located in Meriden, Connecticut.
They are essentially PAK archive files with a special security
envelope. Since SDNet/Works! is the only source that can create
these files, the BRIDGE supports just file extraction for this
archive type. All you need to do is select PAK as the current
archive type and the directory display for archive file selection
in the extract submenu will automatically filter itself for only
files with the SDN or PAK extension. Proceed as usual and either
extract ALL(*.*) or tag files within first.
***** SFX - ZIP,PAK,LHA,ARC to EXE
This submenu makes EXE self-dissolving files from the
selected type. Select the directory where the file can be found.
Chose from the four operation paths. Then select an archive. Press
#3 to start the process. The converted file will be left in the same
directory where the original file was found. *** NOTE: PAK will
overwrite the original - make a backup if original is required.
- PAGE 9 -
***** SELECT AN ARCHIVER TYPE:
MAIN MENU selection #1 allows you to set all BRIDGE operations
to a specific archive type, namely one of those listed: ARC, LZH,
PAK, or ZIP. ALL BRIDGE operations will operate with respect to the
chosen archive type. Each time you run the BRIDGE a default archive
type will be chosen as the current mode for all operations. You may
change this startup type by pressing F5-CHANGE DEFAULTS. Edit the
default entry named 'STARTUP ARCHIVE TYPE'. Be sure to save your new
defaults.
This will allow you to custom tailor THE BRIDGE TERMINUS
to the archive of your choice. You do not necessarily need any or all
of the other archiver types supported by the BRIDGE unless it is
your intention to actually use them.
***** NOTES ON PATH INCLUSIONS, RECURSION, etc:
The BRIDGE TERMINUS doesn't DIRECTLY support path name inclusion
or recursive archive operations. User defined custom parameters for
compress and extract can be inserted which will make these operations
possible. User defined parameters can be entered into the default
table. Then, if you press F4 while you are in the COMPRESS or EXTRACT
submenu you automatically disable all TERMINUS parameters and insert
the custom ones you have entered into the default table. Please read
the documentation that came with the archiver you have selected for
current operation to get more specifics on parameter specifications.
The BRIDGE TERMINUS v2.1A is designed to facilitate fast and easy
'BRUTE FORCE' flat archiving, the kind most often required by
telecommunication BBS and data base users. Included path information is
not top priority for this type of archiving. However, if you need paths
included for your own personal use, we have provided a way to implement
inclusion. Use the custom parameter entry for both compress and extract
in the default table. Pressing F4 allows you to insert almost any legal
parameter supported by the archiver type you have selected.
Archives that were previously constructed with pathname info
included as part of the filename are treated as if the pathname info
were not there. This presents no problem to ARC, LHARC, and PAK. You
may extract ALL(*.*) or tag within etc. TERMINUS will issue a warning
if you attempt to TAG within before extracting from PKZIP archives with
included pathname information. Simply press <SHIFT> <8> or the asterisk
key(*) for ALL files and then proceed to extract. Create a user custom
parameter if you wish to restore the paths.(Read your archiver DOCS)
This parameter is placed in the default table and can be called up by
pressing F4 while you are in the Compress or Extract submenu.
- PAGE 10 -
***** PASSWORD PROTECTION:
Press <F9> to toggle password on or off. The password
protect mode scrambles each individual file in the master
during the COMPRESS process. This is the only time that an
individual file or group of files can be password protected.
The master file, the file containing the individual files
you COMPRESSED, does not get the password protection. Only
the individual files within are protected. It is therefore
possible to construct a master FILE that has some of it's
files password protected and others which are not. This can
be accomplished by adding one or several files at a time to
the master and toggling PASSWORD on or off as needed.
You can even have different passwords for different groups of
files within a master file. The use of password scramble
protection has many uses in corporate inter-office E-Mail,
etc.
The password can be changed by pressing <F5> and
changing the password default parameter. Don't forget to save
your changes when you are finished so that each time you run
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS your first choice password will be loaded.
The same PASSWORD default is used for both COMPRESS and EXTRACT
operations. Not all archivers listed support password garble.
Testing password protected archives may cause a bit of user
concern. Most archivers will report a CRC checksum error or announce
that the password protected file is corrupt. Some archivers offer
an option to test with password. TERMINUS does not implement this
feature. To properly test these archive files you should attempt to
extract the files within using the correct password.
- PAGE 11 -
EXTRACTING files from a master that has some or all of it's
individual files password protected is easily accomplished.
Toggle password on by pressing <F9> , make sure you have the
right password(press <F5> to change it), and extract as you
would normally do. Make repeated passes if more than one
password was used for different groups of file(s). You can't
do any damage if you have the wrong password or the master
file you have chosen doesn't have any password protected files
within.
IF you convert a password protected file to an EXE file
you must use the correct password or the file will not self-
dissolve. Assume the file you created was TEST.ZIP and you
converted it to TEST.EXE . Also assume the password used was
'TERMINUS'. Typing the following from the DOS command line
will do the trick:
A> test.exe -sTERMINUS (PKZIP)
A> test.exe g=TERMINUS (PAK)
Do not use the character '-' or include any spaces in
your password. PKZIP(tm) password protection is case
sensitive so be aware that upper and lower case characters,
i.e. 'Y' or 'y', are considered as being different.
CAUTION!: Remember your password when compressing. There
is no way to extract files within a master that are password
protected if you don't have the right password!
***** MEMORY AVAILABLE FUNCTION:
Memory available for BRIDGE, SHELL, and archiver operations
can be found by pressing CTRL-F key combination while in ANY
MENU or CHANGE DEFAULTS. Free memory for SHELL launch is also
displayed each time you press F3 to go to your favorite shell.
Reading the documentation which comes with your SHELL will
reveal the memory required for proper operation. Compare this to
MEMORY FREE to find out whether your SHELL will function
properly when it is launched from THE BRIDGE TERMINUS.
THE BRIDGE TERMINUS needs about 145K BYTES to work properly.
This figure includes both program and data storage. The MEMORY
FREE reported when using DOS V3.3 and running THE BRIDGE TERMINUS
from PCTOOLS V6.0 non-resident is approximately 405K BYTES. This
is sufficient to re-enter PCTOOLS V6.0 by pressing F3 -DOS SHELL
whenever it is displayed in the lower menu bar.
- PAGE 12 -
The SAME AMOUNT of FREE MEMORY should be reported when you
return to THE BRIDGE TERMINUS after using your SHELL. The amount
of MEMORY FREE will decrease if your SHELL or utility TSR's do
not release all memory previously claimed. Decreasing MEMORY
FREE will also occurr if you do not 'EXIT' your shell and,
instead, re-launch THE BRIDGE TERMINUS by executing BRT21A.EXE.
Doing this will eventually allocate all remaining memory so
that even THE BRIDGE TERMINUS will not work properly and you will
be forced to do a hardware RESET.
***** DIRECTORY PICK LIST:
A DIRECTORY PICK LIST is available when selecting directories
for COMPRESS/EXTRACT target and source paths. The left mouse button
is the same as the <ENTER> key and the right button is equivalent
to the <ESC> key. Pressing <ESC> leaves the PICK LIST with no
changes made to the defaults. If you press <ENTER> while 'NEW ENTRY'
is highlighted you may select a new path.
There are a total of 15 PICK entries. You may continue to
enter new paths after the 15th spot is filled. Each new path
will then be placed at the END of the list and the FIRST
entry(#1) will be deleted to make room.
You may start from scratch simply by using your DOS SHELL to
delete/rename the file BRT.PCK prior to running THE BRIDGE TERMINUS.
This yeilds the same effect as running the TERMINUS for the first
time since the pick file will not be created on disk until the end
of the first work session and all positions in the list will be
labeled as NEW ENTRY.
Starting from scratch with all entries in the PICK LIST
designated as 'NEW ENTRY' is easy. Press <ENTER> and the PATH FINDER
will be executed. 1) Select the drive you wish to scan. 2) Select
one of the displayed paths found on the drive that was scanned.
This selection now becomes part of the new pick list.
***** AUTOCHECK VIRUS SCAN:
You will need to have McAfee's SCAN.EXE program in the directory
specified in the default table. The AUTOCHECK function is available
during COMPRESS or EXTRACT. This function is turned on by pressing F8.
All the files you select to be placed into an archive are first
submitted to virus scan. The COMPRESS process will be aborted if a
virus is detected. You can bypass this feature by turning AUTOCHECK
off.(F8 toggles state). All files that are EXTRACTED from an archive
are automatically checked for virus infection. Please register SCAN.EXE
with McAfee Associates if you use it with the TERMINUS.
- PAGE 13 -
***** VIRUS SCAN SUMMARY:
VIRUS scanning of individual files to be compressed or
of those that have been extracted is accomplished by driving
McAfee's VIRUSCAN program, SCAN.EXE
A. VIRUS SCAN is can be toggled ACTIVE during COMPRESS
or EXTRACT operations.
B. THE ENTIRE COMPRESS SOURCE PATH is scanned if you elect
*.* by pressing SHIFT #8 or the asterisk(*) key. Otherwise
only those files selected are scanned. BRIDGE will abort
before creating the archive if a virus infection is found.
C. The ENTIRE EXTRACT TARGET PATH is scanned, not just the
files that were extracted if you do not 'TAG WITHIN'.
This should not cause a problem since McAfee's VIRUSCAN
is extremely quick.
D. Virus scanning is not active during the creation of
SFX files.
***** AUTHENTICATE VERIFY: ( PKZIP(tm) )
It is possible to utilize this PKZIP(tm) parameter function
feature(provided you have FULL PKZIP registration) by including
the -! parameter in your custom parameters. Now, With the
TERMINUS version 2.1A you can toggle the -! parameter on and off
by pressing CTRL-V while you are using the ZIP archive type. The -!
parameter is automatically sent to PKZIP(tm) when Authenticate is
on. A screen message, 'AUTHENTICATE ON!', will be continuously
displayed when the toggle is in the ON position.
Authenticate Verify adds a 'tamper check' on your original
files and assures the end user that the files he has UNZIPPED
were truly generated by the original author or source.
The Authentication Verification feature of PKZIP(tm) can
only be used if you have FULLY REGISTERED your copy of PKZIP(tm)!
- PAGE 14 -
***** AUTOMATED PATH SELECT:
Each submenu has a 'change path' function which is
initiated when CTRL-P key combination is pressed. You are
first given the choice of which path to change: COMPRESS SOURCE
or TARGET, EXTRACT SOURCE and EXTRACT TARGET. The PICK LIST is
then displayed after you make your selection. You may choose
from one of the PICKS on your list or choose NEW ENTRY. A list
of valid logical drives is displayed if you select NEW ENTRY.
Select which drive you want to search for a new path on. The
next screen displays all found paths/directories on the drive
you selected. Only those 35 characters or less with either normal
or hidden attributes are available for selection. The 35 character
limitation is imposed to help reduce possible command line overflow
errors during virus scan or archiver operations. The drive path scan
will go 15 levels deep with a maximum of 200 paths reported for each
completed drive scan.
These key strokes will produce the following results:
<PGDN> <PGUP> = Display next or previous window page.
<ENTER> = Selects highlighted path.
CTRL-N = Select new drive and path.
CTRL-P = Hardcopy print of the path list with stats.
CTRL-T = Creates an ASCII text file of the path list
in the ROOT directory of the drive that was
scanned.
<ESC> = Quit and return to submenu.
HINT: If you create an ASCII text file of the paths on your
drive while you are using the path find function you can
then use your word processor or text editor to create
additional PICK LISTs. Each list may have a maximum of
15 lines with each 35 characters max long.
***** BULLETIN BOARD POSTING:
The preferred way to post THE BRIDGE TERMINUS on local bulletin
boards, Compuserve, PClink, America ONline, etc. is to upload
the original PKZIP Authenticated archive with the filename:
BRT21A.ZIP
Keeping the filename as shown above will help all system
operators from getting duplicate files with different names. We
thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
- PAGE 15 -
**** DOS BATCH FILES:
This might be considered a function for intermediate to advanced
users. Some users of TERMINUS have constructed custom DOS BATCH
files which they use to perform a variety of functions like,
file copying & deleting, recursive ZIPs, etc. MAIN MENU selection
#5 allows you to select a DOS batch file and execute it right
from TERMINUS. This version of BRIDGE TERMINUS allows the user to
select batch files found on ANY logical drive and/or subdirectory.
Read your DOS manual for more information on DOS BATCH file syntax
and construction.
